3 Reasons to Freeze your Food

Fresh is always best. Right? That’s what wellness gurus, health magazines and scare-mongering food campaigns would have us believe. We associate fresh with meaning homegrown, homemade and free from preservatives. The myth is that in freezing something, the vitamins and minerals are somehow lost or converted in the process. But did you know that freezing meals generally has very little impact on its nutritional value? Whilst the nutritional impact of freezing food varies depending on the food, prior cooking and when in its life stage it’s frozen, generally speaking freezing food doesn’t cause significant detriment.
A great part of our pre made meals is that they’re perfect for freezing! You can have fresh meals delivered to your door, ready to pop in the freezer and pull out at your convenience. We find that having a freezer full of delicious meals can save you on those nights you get stuck.
So if there’s nothing wrong with freezing food, why aren’t we doing it more often? There are so many benefits to popping your fresh ingredients, uneaten leftovers or ready-made meals in the freezer. Here are our top 3:

1. The planet

Everyday, countless amounts of food are thrown out. It’s easy to be overly-ambitious in the supermarket about how many vegetables we will actually eat that week, and by the end of the week we somehow always end up with at least one wrinkly carrot at the bottom of the crisper, smugly proving a point.

It’s no secret that food production impacts our environment through substantial water use, emissions and land repurposing. We have to eat, but we can do our part to ensure that the food being produced is ending up in our bellies rather than the bin.

2. Your budget

Food is expensive, and the price of groceries seems to keep going up. The last thing we want to see is our hard earned cash being forked out for food we don’t even end up eating. Is there anything more frustrating than painstakingly preparing a dish, just to have your fussy child not even touch it? Or having a sudden craving for lasagna, but no one to share it with?

Freezing meals or single ingredients is a great solution to eating the meals you want, without wasting money on ingredients you’ll inevitably end up throwing out.

It also prevents food fatigue, perfect for those who get easily sick of having the same thing every night.
Try batch-making a meal and freezing in individual portions to ease the defrosting process and make a dish stretch further.

3. Emergencies

We’re all guilty of getting home to find there’s nothing in the fridge, or finishing the day utterly exhausted, the prospect of cooking simply unbearable. It’s almost too easy to reach for your phone and begin scrolling through food delivery options. Let’s face it, we all do it. And there’s nothing wrong with occasionally treating yourself. But takeaway food doesn’t come cheap, and by the time you add a delivery and service fee, the hip pocket is well and truly stinging.

Having a few frozen meals in the freezer can save you for those moments when you run out of time and energy. We’re not saying you have to go cold-turkey on your guilty pleasure food orders, but having an emergency freezer stash can save you a small fortune in the long run. And trust us, there’s nothing like coming home from a long day and knowing you’ve got nothing to cook, then opening up the freezer to find a delicious lasagna staring back at you.

Our Aston Lucas ready-to-eat meals come fresh but can absolutely be frozen! So if you’ve picked up some meals from your local grocer and realised you won’t eat them before the expiry date, don’t worry! Pop them in the freezer and pull them out at your convenience. They’ll last for around six months in the freezer.
Another great way of utilising the freezer when it comes to your Aston Lucas orders is bulk buying. Place an order on our online store and stock up on your favourites. By ordering in bulk, you save on delivery fees and ensure that you always have a freezer stash of ready-made meals for those unexpected emergencies or nights where you just can’t be bothered. Try our basil pesto gnocchi for something tangy yet fresh, or our penne amatriciana for something a little fiery. Trust us, they taste just as fresh and delicious after reheating!

How to reheat our meals when frozen:
Our frozen meals can be heated in the same way you’d heat them up fresh. Pop them in the microwave or oven (our packaging is both microwave and oven-safe!) for just a little longer than you would fresh. Our 400g portions, for instance, may take approximately 6 minutes in the microwave, pausing every few minutes to stir.

Frozen food can be a great way to save you time (cook once, eat many times over), money (no more food waste), and the planet (less emissions). It’s a win-win-win.
