National Lasagna Day: Spotlight on our Meat Lasagne

July 29th marks National Lasagna Day, and we’re celebrating by putting the spotlight on our best-selling Meat Lasagna!

Our gourmet lasagna recipe originates in the Abruzzo region of Italy, where jagged coastlines meet stunning mountain landscapes. With the region bordering the glistening Adriatic Sea, Abruzzo offers both stunning natural environments and picturesque ancient villages.

Passed down through the generations, this family recipe has travelled across the seas to land here in Melbourne, where our head chef Renzo continues to honour the traditional recipe that was lovingly passed on to him from his mother and the generations before him.

If there’s one thing Italians can do well, it’s feeding the masses! So, for our founders, bringing this recipe to the large-scale customer-base of Aston Lucas Gourmet felt like an extension of feeding the village.

Whilst we can’t reveal all of our top secrets that make our lasagna what it is, we can highlight some of its interesting perks:

Bechamel sauce? Who needs it?

If you’re feeling outraged at this notion, hear us out: bechamel sauce is not a component of the traditional Abruzzo recipe, so in omitting it from our dish, we’re honouring its origins and staying true to the authenticity we value most. You might be feeling sceptical, but trust us, our delicious combination of cheesy, meaty goodness will have you in the type of foodie-heaven that will make you forget bechamel sauce ever existed!

Local ingredients:

Though the recipe originates from our Italian roots, the ingredients we use are sourced from Australian soil. By using local produce, we support our Aussie farmers whilst simultaneously ensuring the quality of our ingredients is top tier. No imports means that every ingredient- from tomatoes to beef- is as fresh as possible, allowing us to keep our lasagna (and all our products) preservative-free. This provides the perfect fusing of our Italian heritage with our Australian upbringing, enabling us to weave our own stories into the making of our food.
